Vioxx® (rofecoxib) is an arthritis and acute pain medication.  Internationally, Vioxx® is also known as CEOXX. Merck, Inc, the manufacturer of Vioxx has worldwide sales of 2.5 billion dollars in 2003 and marketed the drug in more than 80 countries. Approximately 2 million Americans were taking Vioxx when the drug was voluntary pulled on September 30, 2004.

It was pulled after recent clinical trials have shown that it may double the risk of serious cardiovascular problems including heart attack and strokes. A study of approximately 1.4 million showed that 27,000 people have suffered heart attacks or sudden cardiac deaths from Vioxx. As early as March 2000 Merck was aware of other research showing that people taking Vioxx had double the risk of serious cardiovascular problems.

If you have been taking Vioxx® for over six months or in large amounts, please contact a health care provider immediately. If your doctor has prescribed Vioxx® for you or a loved one for over six months, please seek a second opinion.
